In India the Chaldean system is the one most commonly used, and it is what our Name Finder calculates for every name.
This is a traditional belief system, not science — we present it because many families find it meaningful and fun, not as fact. With that said, here is exactly how it works, so you can understand (and even check) the number on any name page.
The idea in one line
Every letter is given a number, you add them all up, and you keep adding the digits of that total until you are left with a single number from 1 to 9. That final digit is the "name number", and each number has a short personality traditionally attached to it.
How the calculation works, step by step
Step 1 — give each letter its value. In the Chaldean system the values run from 1 to 8 (it never assigns 9 to a letter). For example A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, F=8, and so on.
Step 2 — add them up. Take the name Aarav: A(1) + A(1) + R(2) + A(1) + V(6) = 11.
Step 3 — reduce to a single digit. 11 becomes 1 + 1 = 2. So Aarav is a name number 2. That is exactly what you will see on the Aarav page.
You never need to do this by hand — every name page shows the number and the working — but now you know it is a real, repeatable calculation, not a guess.
What each number is said to mean
