How Indian Name Numerology Works (Chaldean System)

What your "name number" is, how it is calculated in the Chaldean system India uses, and what each number is said to mean.

· Verified against official sources

If you have ever seen a name described as a "number 5 name" or an "8 personality", that is name numerology — an old tradition that turns the letters of a name into a single number from 1 to 9, each said to carry its own character. In India the Chaldean system is the one most commonly used, and it is what our Name Finder calculates for every name.

This is a traditional belief system, not science — we present it because many families find it meaningful and fun, not as fact. With that said, here is exactly how it works, so you can understand (and even check) the number on any name page.

The idea in one line

Every letter is given a number, you add them all up, and you keep adding the digits of that total until you are left with a single number from 1 to 9. That final digit is the "name number", and each number has a short personality traditionally attached to it.

How the calculation works, step by step

Step 1 — give each letter its value. In the Chaldean system the values run from 1 to 8 (it never assigns 9 to a letter). For example A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, F=8, and so on.

Step 2 — add them up. Take the name Aarav: A(1) + A(1) + R(2) + A(1) + V(6) = 11.

Step 3 — reduce to a single digit. 11 becomes 1 + 1 = 2. So Aarav is a name number 2. That is exactly what you will see on the Aarav page.

You never need to do this by hand — every name page shows the number and the working — but now you know it is a real, repeatable calculation, not a guess.

What each number is said to mean

1 — The Leader: independent, original, driven. 2 — The Peacemaker: sensitive, cooperative, diplomatic. 3 — The Expresser: creative, sociable, optimistic. 4 — The Builder: grounded, disciplined, dependable.

5 — The Explorer: curious, adaptable, freedom-loving. 6 — The Nurturer: caring, responsible, warm. 7 — The Seeker: thoughtful, analytical, spiritual. 8 — The Achiever: ambitious, capable, determined. 9 — The Humanitarian: compassionate, idealistic, generous.

Because it is calculated only from the letters, the name number works for any name — even one that is not in our list.

Frequently asked questions

Is name numerology scientific?

No. It is a traditional belief system with a long history in India, not a scientific fact. We share it because many people find it meaningful and enjoyable, and the calculation itself is transparent and repeatable.

What is the Chaldean system?

It is the numerology system most commonly used in India. Each letter is given a value from 1 to 8 (9 is never assigned to a letter), the values are added, and the total is reduced to a single digit from 1 to 9.

Does spelling change the number?

Yes — because the calculation is based on letters, different spellings of the same name (for example Aarav vs Arav) can produce different name numbers.

Where can I see my name’s number?

Open any name in the Name Finder — the page shows the Chaldean name number, what it means, and how the letters add up. It works even for names not in our list.
